Ask for Advice

As a leader you do not have all the answers. Smart leaders surround themselves with people whose knowledge, skills and experience supplement their own. Proverbs 15:22 says, “Without counsel plans fail, but with many advisers they succeed.” When you seek out advice, you open yourself to possibilities and answers that may be outside your line of thinking.

Leaders who isolate themselves in the leadership role put themselves in a position of having to know all the answers. Scripture reminds us, without counsel plans fail. Because as leaders we are fallible. And our experiences are limited. No one can possibly have all the answers. Asking for input and help isn’t a sign of weakness, but rather a sign of greatness. It takes confidence to ask for input and help.

Use four powerful words today. When faced with a decision or leadership opportunity this week, try using four powerful words with peers or reports that you know and trust: “What do you think?” Even if you ask having largely determined your direction, you may receive an answer that will surprise you. You may also receive an answer that confirms your thinking and gives you greater confidence in your solution. And sometimes, you may receive an answer that is much better than what you were thinking.
